{"id":918,"date":"2010-10-03T10:05:05","date_gmt":"2010-10-03T14:05:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.webomator.com\/?p=918"},"modified":"2010-10-03T10:05:05","modified_gmt":"2010-10-03T14:05:05","slug":"hugo-gernsbacks-rocket-completes-its-flight-from-australia-to-illinois","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.webomator.com\/wordpress\/2010\/10\/03\/hugo-gernsbacks-rocket-completes-its-flight-from-australia-to-illinois\/","title":{"rendered":"Hugo Gernsback&#8217;s Rocket Completes its Flight from Australia to Illinois"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align:center;margin-bottom:12px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewaythefutureblogs.com\/2010\/09\/got-it\/trackback\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.webomator.com\/grafx2\/blog\/2010_hugo_award.jpg\" alt=\"Frederik Pohl and his 2010 Hugo Award\" width=\"412\" height=\"450\" border=\"0\"><\/a>\n<\/div><p align=\"left\">Over at <em>The Way the Future Blogs<\/em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewaythefutureblogs.com\/2010\/09\/got-it\/trackback\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Frederik Pohl shows us<\/a> that his 2010 Hugo award for &quot;Best Fan Writer&quot; has touched down after its continent-spanning flight.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Now if you&#8217;re familiar with his decades of professional work as a science fiction writer and editor you might be muttering &quot;Fan Writer&#8230;?&quot; to yourself and, believe me, I understand, but Pohl&#8217;s earned the award in at least one of two ways: first for his blog &#8211; whose name is a play on his retrospective book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0345260597?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=webomator-20&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=0345260597\"><em>The Way the Future Was<\/em><\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=webomator-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=0345260597\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/> &#8211; and second because he was one of the very first science fiction fans in the modern sense. Which, I think , means &quot;in any sense&quot;.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">If you read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0345260597?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=webomator-20&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=0345260597\">the book<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=webomator-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=0345260597\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/> (which I recommend) you&#8217;ll find that fans then were exactly like fans are today; that in itself is interesting. You&#8217;ll also find that in spite of his influence as a writer he may have contributed even more to the genre when he was wearing his editor&#8217;s hat, or his agent&#8217;s hat. Or both. Though I don&#8217;t suggest he stacked them in the way your  mind&#8217;s eye is seeing them right now.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">On a related note I&#8217;ve recently enjoyed a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.starshipsofa.com\/20100924\/starshipsofa-talks-to-fred-pohl-and-jack-vance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">happily rambling interview<\/a> with Pohl and Jack Vance at the <em>Starship Sofa<\/em> site. It&#8217;s probably more a conversation than an interview.
