{"id":3824,"date":"2015-05-18T07:16:36","date_gmt":"2015-05-18T12:16:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.webomator.com\/?p=3824"},"modified":"2015-05-18T07:16:36","modified_gmt":"2015-05-18T12:16:36","slug":"six-city-plans-from-the-retro-future-via-web-urbanist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.webomator.com\/wordpress\/2015\/05\/18\/six-city-plans-from-the-retro-future-via-web-urbanist\/","title":{"rendered":"Six city plans from the retro future, via Web Urbanist"},"content":{"rendered":"<a href=\"http:\/\/weburbanist.com\/2015\/05\/07\/retrofuturistic-urbanism-6-cities-as-they-could-have-become\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.webomator.com\/grafx3\/blog\/retro_future_city_planning01.jpg\" alt=\"Retro Futuristic San Francisco\" width=\"501\" height=\"353\" class=\"img_wide_open\"><\/a>\n<p>Web Urbanist goes retro-futuristic in <a href=\"http:\/\/weburbanist.com\/2015\/05\/07\/retrofuturistic-urbanism-6-cities-as-they-could-have-become\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this short series<\/a> of city planning visions for five American cities &#8211; and one imaginary one.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s good to know that &#8211; this <em>being<\/em> the future &#8211; we&#8217;re all zooming around San Francisco in our (patented!) flying saucers; Columbus will, by now, have floating skyscrapers <a href=\"http:\/\/weburbanist.com\/2015\/05\/07\/retrofuturistic-urbanism-6-cities-as-they-could-have-become\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.webomator.com\/grafx3\/blog\/retro_future_city_planning02.jpg\" alt=\"Houston, in the retro future\" width=\"221\" height=\"507\" class=\"img_flush_left\"><\/a>in a very nearly Retropolitan setting; and Manhattan gets a familiar, multi-tiered layout to accommodate air traffic, cargo hauling, and trains.<\/p>\n<p>Houston (left) will obviously have at least one Hugh Ferriss building. In other words, pretty much what we ought to expect &#8211; with one exception. Where are the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Green_belt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">greenbelts<\/a>? <\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Cause you just can&#8217;t have a retro-futuristic megacity without its essential farmlands, dairies, and orchards.\n<\/p>\n<p>Cities like this nearly make sense. But if you&#8217;re still trucking in your food from distant farming communities then you&#8217;ve got some shocking waste of energy. You will also have created <em>two<\/em> societies instead of one, where the cities get everything they need from the farms and the farms get more or less exactly what they have today.<\/p>\n<p>So get those greenbelts in there.
