This
is a teaser image for my insanely huge work in progress,
a ten-chapter retro science fiction comic book called
"Empire State Patrol". In the story,
six construction workers from 1930 find themselves in
the far future world of 1990 - where the locals have
the mistaken idea that they're all flying aces, and
expect them to leap into rocket ships to defend the
city of Nova York. It's built on the site of the old
city of New York, where the only remaining monument
of earlier days is the Empire State Building - where
our boys used to work.
The
whole thing started in the summer of '99, when I was
simultaneously reading old Buck Rogers comics from
the 1930's, and looking at Lewis Wickes Hine's famous
photographs of the workers at the Empire State Building
site. I started to wonder what would happen if some
of these guys were to find themselves adrift in the
sort of Buck Rogers future they knew from their comics
and pulp magazines. And now, a few years later, I'm
working on a comic book project that will answer that
question.
It's
a huge undertaking, even more so than I realized when
I started. But my goal lately has been to find a way
to spend most of my time on a project of my own, something
that I think is interesting and, well, that just plain
wants to exist. And this is the one I chose.
There
will eventually be a web site for the series, but for
now I'm putting minor teasers and updates in my commercial
site on a single page of retro-futuristic
comic book goodness.
